#0 Initial release notes for Scriptorium Prime v.0.0.1

# 1, 2024-02-15 version: 0.0.1+0

Hi, I'm a solo developer and this is my initial beta release of the program "Scriptorium Prime". The idea I have in mind is to create a text editor that puts the drafting process at the centre of stage, something I feel is missing in common text editing programs. The two column mode in this design is two show you the previous version of your document while you have an editable version on the right, to help you feel more free to make changes without feeling that you are loosing your texts or strains of thought. I want you to have the ability to just write freely, while the program takes care of the previous versions for you.

If people are interested in a roadmap of this project I might publish one, but for now I think version updates are enough. Most of them will likely be in the same format as this one. Some paragraphs of general thought or summaries of development since last time and a list of what's been added, changed or removed.

This version provides a text editor with basic functionality, and here are some of the specs:

  • + Rich Text Editor, input through a `Quill editor`, with formatting tools and document search abilities.
  • + Two column view, left column for the loaded document and right column for the edits made on the loaded document.
  • + First version of the `.scribe` file released. These project files have the ability to keep track of updates to drafts, and will do so in future updates to this program. The files can already track drafts, but this version `0.0.1` haven't implemented this functionality yet; wait for further updates.
  • + Basic project handling tools:
    • + New Project, button; for creating `.scribe` files for holding projects.
    • + Open/Load, button; for opening `.scribe` files into the editor.
    • + Save and Save as..., buttons; for saving changes made to projects.
  •  Currently, only released for Windows desktops. Other OS and platforms will be considered in the future, once the project moved along a bit and if I have access to machines needed to produce them. (like for Mac I need to have a Macintosh computer to build programs for it.)

Initial Acknowledgements & back history of this app:
As a programmer, I've used the git-version control system for years and loved it, but realized it's a bit intimidating to many people due to its very computery interface. So, for long, I've been thinking that this kind of tool would be great for people even outside the tech sphere. But found no interesting implementation until I wrote a project report in one of my Material science courses, version control of text documents would work great! So hence a text editor with built-in version control and GUI would be nice! I didn't come up with a good GUI until one day in early 2024 I saw this tweet from Mat Webb where I shared a sketch of an idea that looked like the image you can see pasted below. The sketch was inspiring and married well with the ideas I already had brewing, so it got me started to work on this project asap. And the same evening I had an initial working copy that sort of did replicate the layout. It wasn't perfect, but it was a start.

Now about 10 days later I have a version ready enough for an initial beta release, where I'm writing all this down for you to read. So kudos to Matt Webb here! I'm not sure if I'll follow this design to the point, but your tweet and initial encouragement got me going, and if things turn out well I'll figure out some way to compensate you for the initial spark.
